Venous thromboembolism refers to a medical condition characterized by the formation of blood clots in veins, typically occurring in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis. These clots can partially or completely obstruct blood flow, leading to various complications depending on their size and location. One of the most severe consequences is when a clot breaks free from its original site, travels through the bloodstream, and lodges itself in another organ—most commonly within one of the lungs' branches—resulting in a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism. Venous thromboembolism can manifest differently among individuals; some may experience no symptoms at all, while others might notice swelling, pain, warmth, or redness around the affected area. Risk factors include prolonged immobility (such as during long periods of travel), surgery (especially orthopedic procedures), certain underlying conditions like cancer or heart disease, hormonal contraceptives use for an extended period of time, obesity, and genetic predisposition. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to avoid severe complications associated with venous thromboembolism and may involve anticoagulant medications and lifestyle modifications aimed at preventing further clot development.
