Dear Doctor - Participate in the Survey on hypothyroidism "A new survey has found that nearly one in four Americans adults have hypothyroidism, a condition in which the body produces too little thyroid hormone. This means that more than 20 million people in the United States alone are living with hypothyroidism.The findings, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, come from a nationally representative survey of nearly 4,000 adults. Participants were asked whether they had ever been told by a doctor or other health care professional that they had hypothyroidism.Overall, the prevalence of hypothyroidism was 24.5%, with women (28%) nearly twice as likely as men (16%) to have the condition. The prevalence also increased with age, from 5% among adults aged 18-34 to 39% among those aged 65 and older.There are a number of possible explanations for these findings. For one, the thyroid gland itself may become less efficient with age. Additionally, preconception and pregnancy can both lead to changes in thyroid function that can result in hypothyroidism. Given the high prevalence of both of these conditions among women, it's not surprising that they would be more likely to develop hypothyroidism.The good news is that hypothyroidism is highly treatable with medication.
