Placenta previa is usually diagnosed during a routine ultrasound. If the placenta is found to be covering the cervix, further testing may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. This may include a transvaginal ultrasound, which provides a more detailed view of the placenta.
Placenta previa can cause a number of complications, including preterm labor, bleeding, and placental abruption. Preterm labor is when labor begins before the 37th week of pregnancy. Bleeding can occur if the placenta detaches from the wall of the uterus. These include avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol during pregnancy, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding multiple pregnancies.
