Description:
A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Growth Update - Approach to a child with Short Stature
Approaching a child with short stature involves a systematic and comprehensive evaluation to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment plan. The initial assessment includes a detailed medical history and physical examination to identify any signs of chronic illnesses, genetic syndromes, or endocrine disorders. Growth charts are used to track the child's growth pattern over time, comparing it with standard growth percentiles to assess whether the child's stature is significantly below the norm for their age and sex.
Further diagnostic workup may include laboratory tests and imaging studies. Blood tests can evaluate levels of growth hormone, thyroid function, and other relevant markers to rule out hormonal deficiencies or imbalances. Bone age assessment through an X-ray of the hand and wrist helps determine if the child's skeletal maturity aligns with their chronological age. Genetic testing might be indicated if a hereditary condition, such as Turner syndrome or a growth hormone receptor deficiency, is suspected.
