Description:

A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on psoriasis: what is it

Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune skin disorder characterized by the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to thickened, red patches covered with silvery-white scales. These patches, known as plaques, typically appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, although they can develop anywhere on the body. Psoriasis is not contagious, but it is a long-lasting condition that can fluctuate in severity, often triggered by factors such as stress, infections, or certain medications.

The exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from an overactive immune system, where T-cells mistakenly attack healthy skin cells, causing an accelerated production of new cells. This immune response, combined with genetic predisposition, leads to the visible symptoms of psoriasis. People with a family history of the condition are more likely to develop it, and it can manifest at any age, though it commonly begins in young adulthood.
