A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on Symptoms of Mucormycosis - By Dr. Nilima Telang.
Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a serious fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. Dr. Nilima Telang outlines the symptoms of mucormycosis, which vary depending on the part of the body affected.
For rhinocerebral mucormycosis, which affects the sinuses and brain, symptoms include nasal congestion, sinus pain, fever, headache, and swelling of the face. Black lesions on the nasal bridge or upper inside of the mouth are a characteristic sign.
In pulmonary mucormycosis, which affects the lungs, symptoms include fever, cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. This form often mimics other respiratory conditions, making diagnosis challenging.
Gastrointestinal mucormycosis presents with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal bleeding. This type is more common in young children.
Cutaneous mucormycosis occurs when the fungus enters through a break in the skin, causing localized infection. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, and the development of blackened skin tissue.
