What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a condition in which the pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently higher than normal. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120/80 mmHg. When the top number (systolic pressure) is higher than 140 mmHg or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is higher than 90 mmHg, it is considered to be hypertension.

Causes of Hypertension

The exact cause of hypertension is not known, but there are several factors that can increase the risk of developing the condition. These include age, family history, obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, stress, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and sleep apnea.

Effects of Hypertension

Hypertension can have serious effects on the body. It can damage the heart, arteries, and other organs. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. It can also cause kidney damage, vision loss, and cognitive decline.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Hypertension is usually diagnosed with a physical exam and blood tests. If hypertension is present, the doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and reducing stress. The doctor may also prescribe medication to help control blood pressure.

Managing Hypertension

In addition to lifestyle changes and medication, there are several other ways to help manage hypertension. These include monitoring blood pressure regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding certain medications, and avoiding foods high in sodium and saturated fat.
