Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the hands and wrists. It is caused by compression of the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand. Symptoms of CTS include numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and wrist. CTS can be debilitating and can affect a person’s ability to perform daily activities. Fortunately, there are a variety of innovative treatment options that can help relieve the symptoms of CTS.
CTS is often caused by repetitive motions of the hands and wrists, such as typing or playing a musical instrument. Other causes of CTS include arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, and obesity. In some cases, the cause of CTS is unknown.
The most common symptom of CTS is numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers. Other symptoms include pain in the hand and wrist, decreased grip strength, and difficulty performing daily activities.
A physician can diagnose CTS based on a physical examination and a review of the patient’s medical history. The physician may also order tests such as an X-ray or MRI to confirm the diagnosis.
The goal of treatment for CTS is to reduce symptoms and improve function. Treatment options for CTS include:
Non-surgical treatments for CTS include rest, splinting, physical therapy, and medications. Resting the affected hand and wrist can help reduce symptoms. Splinting can help keep the wrist in a neutral position to reduce pressure on the median nerve. Physical therapy can help improve range of motion and strength. Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation and pain.
For some patients, surgery may be necessary to relieve the symptoms of CTS. Surgery involves releasing the transverse carpal ligament to reduce pressure on the median nerve. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.
In addition to traditional treatments for CTS, there are a variety of innovative treatments that can help relieve symptoms. These treatments include:
Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves to reduce inflammation and pain in the hand and wrist. It is a non-invasive treatment that can be done in a doctor’s office.
Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses light to reduce inflammation and pain. Laser therapy can be done in a doctor’s office and is often combined with other treatments such as physical therapy.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It is believed to help reduce inflammation and pain.
Magnetic therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnets to reduce inflammation and pain. It is often used in combination with other treatments such as physical therapy.
