Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This review investigates the potential of ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM), as a tool for managing OSA. We analyze a recent study evaluating ChatGPT's agreement with expert otolaryngologists in diagnosing OSA. While the study highlights promise, limitations and ethical considerations are discussed. The review concludes by emphasizing the potential of AI as a complementary tool to support healthcare professionals, not a replacement, in navigating the complexities of OSA management.

Introduction

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) disrupts breathing during sleep, leading to daytime fatigue, increased health risks, and reduced quality of life. Diagnosing OSA often involves a sleep study, which can be expensive and inconvenient. This raises the question: Can artificial intelligence (AI) play a role in improving OSA management?

ChatGPT in the Spotlight: Assessing OSA Diagnosis

A recent study explored the potential of ChatGPT, a large language model, in assisting with OSA diagnosis. The study involved:
